Can CBD Help With Stress, Anxiety and Depression?

Can CBD Help With Stress, Anxiety and Depression?

Depression is a common mood disorder with symptoms such as sadness, loss or anger.(1) Depression can interfere with your daily life, influence relationships and some chronic health conditions. Health conditions that could worsen due to depression include arthritis, asthma, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity. Men, women and children can have differing experiences and symptoms due to depression. However, some general symptoms include:

  • Mood changes such as anger, irritability, anxiety, restlessness.
  • Emotional well-being such as feeling empty, sad, hopeless.
  • Behavioral changes such as loss of interest, use of drugs, engage in high risk activities.
  • Cognitive abilities such as inability to concentrate, delayed response during conversations.
  • Sleep patterns such as insomnia, restless sleep, excessive sleepiness.
  • Physical well-being such as fatigue, pains and headache.

  • Some of the common causes of depression include:

  • Family history of depression and other mood disorders can put you at a higher risk.
  • Early childhood trauma can affect the way your body reacts to fear and stress.
  • Brain structure such as lower frontal lobe activity can increase your risk.
  • Medical conditions such as chronic illness/pain, insomnia, ADHD can increase your risk.
  • Drug or alcohol usage can put you at a higher risk.

  • You may notice a pattern here. Depression, anxiety, stress and insomnia can be both a cause and an effect. Addressing one condition/symptom can have an effect on the others. A 2016 study by the National Institute of Health (NIH) found that CBD could represent a fast antidepressant drug by enhancing both the serotonergic and glutamate cortical signaling receptor mechanism.(5)

As for anxiety, an article by published by Medical Cannabis Network (MCN) in 2017, stated that one out of ten people gets diagnosed with anxiety, making it the most common mental health disorder. In the United States, nearly 7 million people are affected with generalized anxiety disorder.(4)

A research review conducted in 2012 found a number of international studies which concluded that CBD has been shown to reduce anxiety. The stress-reducing effect appears to be related to activity in both the limbic and paralimbic brain areas.(3) Also in 2012, the NIH found that CBD has therapeutic potential over a wide range of non-psychiatric and psychiatric disorders such as anxiety and depression.(6)

Other studies published by the NIH found that anxiety maybe linked to low serotonin, so CBD’s effect on serotonin receptors might explain these beneficial effects.(2)  Serotonin is a chemical in your body that plays a role in regulating your mood, sleep, digestion and behavior.

In the United States, the cost of treatment for anxiety and depression is very expensive. Many people are turning towards CBD as a supplement. More and more personal testimonials are being collected to record their experiences regarding the efficacy of CBD, which often has little to no side-effects associated with it. CBD may even have remarkable benefits when used regularly in your health care routine.
